This situation came up in a RAID-6 (18 drives in the set) system with two
hot spares.
It appears that if you are using hot spares in a SCSI IOA system and the
IOA is serving the load source then the hot spares must be located in load
source capable positions.
In our case the load source is D7. The only other possible locations for
load source are D8 and D9 so therefore the hot spares must be located in
D8 and D9.
If a non load source drive fails (ours in location D10 failed) and a hot
spare (ours in location D9 became active) takes the place of that drive in
the RAID set you end up with a replacement drive in a non-load source
position configured as a model 50 non-configured drive. Once that occurs
the replacement drive is no longer eligible to be a hot spare because it
is not in a load source capable position. Hot spares become a model 51.
IBM is telling us that we must power down the system in order to swap the
non-configured drive in D10 into position D9 to make it an available hot
spare for this system.
This seems to make the whole concept of hot spare useless.
