Pete,

I know you didn't intend this as a scientific sampling. I would suggest
that people that get to go to COMMON conferences are from companies trying
to stay up-to-date.

At every conference that I speak at, I always ask the number of people on
various releases. At both COMMON in MSP and in COMMON Europe in Milan this
year, more than 50% the people said they were on 6.1 or 7.1 in my sessions.
That is on the upswing which I think is a good thing. There is a lot of FUD
in the market place about going to 6.1 or 7.1, and if you plan your upgrade,
follow ALL the steps, insure you followed all the steps, your upgrade should
be very very smooth.

I have no special knowledge, but I'd bet in the fall IBM announces end
of support of V5R4 for fall 2012.

I get the feeling IBM is weighing the decision based on the number of
users who could not move to V6R1, which seemed to usually be due to
vendor software issues.

I think the best thing they could do is to announce end of support and
get the last stragglers moving.
