They are sorted based on the information inside the iso. There are forward/rearward links in there telling the software what iso images to be looking for based on the information stored in the root directory of the iso. The name of the iso has no bearing on what order it's put in nor how it is used. Since the sort has to open each of the iso's in the image catalog it takes a few minutes for it to verify the stack of images as complete and usable.
