Kirk,
Give me a call tomorrow morning if you need to discuss. Basically,
you are going to load the LIC (from the latest I_BASE_01 CD) and the
operating system (from the DVD) and that is it on the new system. Make sure
your disks are all in the ASP and protected (Mirror or Raid5, etc). Then you
take a full go save 21 from old system, and do a restore 21 on the new
system. You will need to do a RTVSYSINF on old box before the save 21 &
UPDSYSINF after the restore 21, and then immediately upgrade all the LPPs to
the same release as the operating system on the new box. Put the PTFs on,
IPL the machine, and if crossing the 6.1 boundary for the first time convert
all the programs.
I did one of these on Sunday when we upgraded/migrated from a 170 at
V5R3 to a Power7 at 6.1.1. One of my guys had prepared the new machine
during the week with Lic and OS. Unfortunately, the 170 had 1/4 cartridge,
and the new Power7 had LTO 4, so we brought one of our 520s in with both
those media to do the conversion. I am also doing one of these on Tuesday,
but it's a 270 at V5R4M0 going to a Power7 at 7.1. Everything works the
same.

Subject: Pete or Larry - Help Finding Thread on Skip Release Upgrades
Larry, Pete or Whoever,
There was a thread not that long ago about how you guys move a system from a
downlevel system to a new current OS system. I do that process myself but I
have a client wanting some more backup. The very short version of the
process is
Box comes in RISC to RISC
Leave LIC and QSYS alone
Restore the rest of the Save 21
Upgrade Using Current OS media
PTFs
Fix what ever is broke
I remember you both responding but I can't find that thread here on
Midrange... Can someone point me to that thread?
Many Thanks
