I found out some years ago that not all tape libraries can be used as
alt-IPL devices. IIRC it was a SCSI-attached LTO3 library and a Power5
system but that restriction may be applicable to your situation as well. In
my case I was able to juggle the LPAR hardware around to get an optical
drive on the LPAR so I could D-IPL from CD.

The support call where this was revealed was interesting in that I called it
in to IBM originally as a hardware problem & got a hardware/tape guy. He
said that the IPL issue was actually a software problem so, rather than
transferring me over, he added someone from software to the call so we both
could learn/discuss together.

Hello,
I have a playbox here with which I want to test backup/restore
procedures. I did an GO SAVE 21 to fully save the system to a 8144
tape drive in a 3573-L2U library.
Now I want to restore it from there but I'm unable to boot from the
tape. The system gets into a SRC B2004158 without any noticeable tape
movement.
I verified that the FC controller i nthere (9406-5749) is among the
ones that are supported to boot from. I also checked the logs after
backup to see if all was well.
Any tips?
TIA, Rolf
