Maybe I am just in a lucky position here. While the techs are still
downgrading new laptops to XP and users are complaining that the old
version of Office we are running is causing compatibility problems with
documents received by others we manage to keep our i's running the latest
and greatest.

It's a slippery slope once you start letting yourself get behind.

We schedule downtimes every other month to perform saves, reclaims, ptf's,
and, if available, hardware and/or OS upgrades. It's just already on the
schedule. At that time we switch over to our backup machines (Mimix).
Since we have a backup machine and all, we reserve the right to have the
primary down until Monday AM. However, since having our backup machine
we've never missed the scheduled switch back on Sunday evenings. Keeping
a regular pattern of Friday outage to perform switch and Sunday outage to
perform switch back allows them to schedule around that.
So, since we are current on maintenance, are going to bring the system
down anyway, then the only additional is getting software upgraded and
verifying that all the stars are aligned to allow us to perform the
upgrade. Granted, V5R4 to 6.1 was a bit of work getting those vendors to
shake out of their slovenly behavior (of which we cast some vendors
aside).
