As to "better," would "better" still involve a fairly painless installation, with the non-reporting mirrored pair coming right back up?

40S, running V4R2. And the missing drives ARE spinning up, so long as they're plugged in. Is there a possibility (short of both drives failing at the same time, yet still spinning up normally) that it's something other than the 6530?
