Jack,
We're current on PTFs (running V5R4M5) and the tapes are all brand new.
Already deleted and rebuilt the tape drive description. I'm trying a full
power down cycle to see if that resets what needs resetting. I tried to
vary on with a reset option, but that did not work either.

Clean the tape drive, check SST, delete recreat the tape drive. I saw some
hits on this error where older tapes were involved and having to wait on the
tape drive to rewind etc. You current on PTF's.

Hello list,
I have a new E4A system with a 4mm tape drive. I was just trying to
initialize a new tape when the drive went south on me. I deleted the
tape
description and created it from scratch, but it will not vary on now.
I'm getting a CPD2616 error (device will not vary on) with reason code
00003404 which just says that an error occurred during the vary on
process. It says to check that the device is powered on, which it is. I
am able to manually remove the tape cartridge and re-insert it just fine.
Any ideas on where to go with this?
Seems kind of silly that it would throw up like this on a simple INZTAP
command.
