the concept of members is originating from mainframe and was introduced for text data only, not for database!!! System /38 used database files (they didn't have anything else)
as "storage engine" for text38 and for source files. IMHO it is not a good idea to use members for database files and multiformat - shudder!!!

Actually, I wish that IBM had treated members as the actual table - they
do that with path names in FTP, where you don't PUT a FILE, you PUT the
member. Alas!
