I've installed 7.1 on Win7 64bit many times and not had a single issue like your describing. I suspect the registry has some quirks in it. I suggest you back that up just before installation. You might consider one of the registry clean/repair tools first (I use CCleaner). The Win7 registry gets messed up much more often than my XP registry did. (I'd still never go back to XP unless forced)

I have also installed under VMware and not had any issues.

Doing a standard upgrade from 6.1 or a clean install after removing 6.1 I
get a message that a Reboot is needed first. Many trys later and several
uses Restore Points I'm on 6.1. I have also on my machine a Virtual Machine
( VMware Player ) with WP Pro with SP3 ) and True Windows Virtual Machine
running Whatever version of XP MS installs. In both cases I'm up to date on
fixes on all 3 copies of the OS. All 3 get the same error. But if I install
6.1 it goes on cleanly.

IBM has workaround at

past the error. but cause more problems and I need to use the Restore Point
to get things back to normal and at times reinstall Office 2007.

Anyone else seen this? At this rate I'm going to wait for 8.x!
