Richard,

I am kicking the tires right now... My first use of identity column
(application problem log db), and it's SWEET! Haven't hit any snags so
far, and eliminates some ugly code. However, I was just wondering how
to get the system generated identity value back after the write. I've
Googled, but nothing solid yet... Looks like I'd need to embed SQL to
retrieve VALUES IDENTITY_VAL_LOCAL() INTO :LAST_ID. Still, for logging,
I won't need to know, so it's a winner from my perspective.

Is identity value passed back in a file information DS? Should it be?
Perhaps an API, or a service program function? Import variable? Just
go on and replace my "WRITE myfile" opcodes with "exec sql insert ..."?

A combination of _GENUUID, Verns timestamp routine and job info would
most likely guarantee uniqueness :-)

Otherwise an Identity field in the database indeed guarantees it.

Curiousity question:

How many of you are using Identity fields in databases for new
applications ?

In the past we always created the base key such as Customer Number,
Order Number and that was the primary key. Now I think the wisdom is
to always use an identity field for primary key as well as Customer
Number, Order Number, etc.... as indexes.

Would like to hear thoughts ?.....

... it depends, maybe for referential constraints, if there are database

relations.
BTW: genUUID on AS/400 is only most likely unique!!! Best choice would
be an
identity column, if uniqueness is needed.
