I was able verify using the zmailer.org site, but was not able to telnet to
the mx server smtp.secureserver.net.

Are they using another technique for this?

Let me answer that. I often use telnet, on port 25, to test email. If
you go to this website and use the first entry to test your email account
you can enter all the commands shown using telnet on port 25 to that same
address. This allows me to test if my i can connect directly to one of
their mx records.
