Jerry! Don't scare people like that!

We recently installed the latest Cume, DB and HIPERs on both a 520(Power5) and a 550(Power6). The PTF application IPL took about 20 minutes on both, with the actual PTF part being 4 minutes on the 550 and 11 minutes on the 520.

Image catalogs are your friend. If you are not using them you are doing both you and your employer a disservice. Seriously.

Your system backups should be part of your overall backup strategy, not your maintenance strategy. If you feel that you need an additional backup after applying PTFs an Option 22 will work just fine, why backup all of your data two extra times? Not to mention that ad hoc backups will just complicate your DR plan.

Subject: RE: Cume PTF

We have a 520, which came in with V5R3 and is now at V5R4. My policy is to install each CUME as it comes out, and any groups which have been updated since the last CUME. I follow the recommendations by doing a full system (21) both before and after the PTFs are applied. We are not a 24x7 shop like you are so I apply the CUME and Groups on a Saturday; I schedule eight [8] hours for the whole thing so it is no trivial matter for a shop like yours.
