The only thing I've ever done with xdm (and this was on FreeBSD, not i) was to present a sign-on screen for local users to login. xdm didn't present a desktop or anything like that, just a sign-on panel. I needed to use a window manager to get a desktop.

As I mentioned, IBM includes the iceWM window manager (and presumably twm is there as well -- it usually is with XFree86 -- but I didn't try it)

Regarding VNC... I typically use a VPN to connect from outside of the LAN, so the VPN would protect VNC. I've also used SSH's tunneling (both for direct X11, and for VNC) and it works fine.

How about xdm instead of (super-insecure) VNC for those who do want a whole
desktop? Have you ever seen that on i? That's actually what I envisioned
when I mentioned X-server. But I do know from daily experience that with
secure connection capability (e.g. putty), VNC isn't bad.
