RE: Remote Outq Question

Not IPDS. IPDS (Intelligent Printer Data Stream) has nothing to do with
IP (Internet Protocol) though the IPDS stream can get to the printer
over IP.

Don't let the nay-sayers scare you away from a remote outq. Remote outq
on the i uses LPR to communicate with the LPD server running on your
printer. LPR/LPD can be very fast. The entire spool file can be
delivered in huge chunks depending on the amount of memory available in
the printer. Downside is that if there's a paper jam on the printer, you
have to use printer controls to restart the print job rather than using
i controls. Once the remote outq has delivered your spool file to the
printer, it's done with it and can delete the spool file from the outq.

Using a print device with IP protocol works, too. It is more
interactive, delivering a page at a time to the printer. With today's
fast networks and fast computers, you'll never notice the difference.
The print writer in this scenario keeps track of the pages that have
printed so you can stop and start the print job as needed.

I am pretty sure would need some sort of IPDS attachment in order to use
it as a *PRT device.

Is there a reason you have defined it as a Remote Outq instead of an

IP attached printer?

Using the IP method, you have full control of your spool files

including restart at page functions that you do not have on a Remote
Outq.

Also, I have found that the IP defined printer supports more font

attributes.

If your printer can be defined by a unique static ip address, try

creating a *PRT device.

Subject: Remote Outq Question


I have a customer that has an HP 4200N printer that we have setup to

use as a remote outq to print from the i. It works fine but is printing
really small. It is an IP attached printer. I have tried raw, text and
xaix for the RMTPRTQ and *HP4, *HP5 and *HP4000 for the MFRTYPMDL, but
the font stays the same. Does anyone have any ideas?
