Yep. Office is a cash cow for Microsoft alright. I was just musing about other folks abandoning MSO because of the presentation I did last week at the Common Conference on using OO with DB2 for i5/OS data.

The only thing missing in OO at present in regard to DB2 for i is the data transfer plug in that IBM provides for Excel. If they would produce one for Calc, that would be great. I plan to move a customer off of MSO(2003) this summer. I'll probably blog about the success (or failure) of that when it is complete. They are an i shop so the DB2 for i integration issue is important to them.

And no, I don't think MSO is going to go away but OO is a great alternative in these tough economic times, especially for IBM i shops that need office productivity tool integration with DB2 for i.

(I *tried* to keep this relevant to Midrange with the DB2 for i references but will move to PCTECH before David posts any more incriminating pictures about me on Facebook in retaliation)

Pete,

While OpenOffice is 'cheap' and works well for independents and individuals,
when companies have invested in the MS technology, it is nice to be able to
support them. I guess that is why you have an MSDN subscription...

It seems there is always a conversation about MS charging for their suite,
but when the majority of companies still invest in it, it is here to stay!

80% of what Office 20xx has and about 99% of what a normal office user
needs is in OpenOffice. 3.2 has been stable and fast. And, free is
always good. Been an OO user for 7 years and have never missed MS Office.

I am an MS Action Pack subscriber and an MSDN subscriber so I could use
MSO 2010 for no additional cost but I just don't see the need. Running
something light and fast and free just appeals to me.

I just upgraded to Office 2010 on one of my test PCs.

Looks like the ribbon bar and general look and feel has been tweaked
again.

Anyone know any benefits to Office 2010 other than looks ? :-)
