Can you explain how you were able to upgrade the HMC remotely and the
others were done in-place?

I've upgraded 6 HMCs to 7.7.1 so far, five CR4s and one CR5. No issues
with any of them, we don't have complicated setups though.

Three of them i did remotely, the other ones needed to be done in-place.

Make sure the minimum FSP level is correct before upgrading.
