I've been asked to email a newsletter (pdf) in the email body,
not as an attachment.

MIME e-mail has a keyword that tells the client whether data should be
treated as in-line or attachment. You could, therefore, code a PDF as
an inline document.

I believe that IBM Notes sends files in MIME messages encoded with the
Imbedded option as standard operating procedure. Clients (like Notes and
nothing else, I believe) will show the icon (or whatever) inline. The rest
of the world shows them as attachments.
