The current HMC is managing a power 5 box, the new power6 is in another

console then add a managed system via HMC.

This is in no way necessary. Is the current HMC attached to the Power
5 box directly, using just a patch cable?

Configure a new VLAN on the switch and assign it to two ports, plug
both the HMC and the HMC Port on the Power 5 box into the configured
ports. Then, plug the Power 6 HMC port into the switch HMC VLAN in
it's rack, make sure that the VLAN is reachable from both switches
(check your trunk config), and then power up the Power 6 box.

Or, if your network guys are not cooperative, get a 10$ 5 port switch
and a long patch cable.

Also, make sure that the HMC is a on a recent enough level to handle a
Power 6 box - if possible, upgrade to V7R7 SP1.

No need to use LAN console in this.
