I know for a fact that the forward observers who call in artillery strikes
need to be able to do the math with a piece of paper and a pencil in the
event their fire control computers and calculators fail or are damaged.

Only 54 days until the deployment is up. (Fingers crossed)

The Navy (and probably the other services) still use Morse code, semaphore,
and celestial navigation. Not as a rule, mind you, but as a fall back.
Remember how the earthlings communicated in "Independence Day"? Gotta be
prepared.
