I wasn't aware of Steve Will's blog post on cloud computing with IBM i, so thanks. IBM has been soliciting input on Linkedin about offering an on-going hosting service for developers - like the virtual loaner program, but permanent - fee based. Maybe something like that could be expanded into hosting application runtime environments for end-users - letting users focus on their core business - rather than information technology. My gut feel is that a cloud-based hosting organization could offer a better runtime environment and applications under IBM i & Power 7, than those who are doing virtual hosting with Windows, Linux, & Intel. Maybe a way to expand the IBM i market.
I shouldn't suggest this, but hosting RPG open-source projects on a public IBM i server would be a much better environment than a hosting service like Sourceforge.

Have you seen Steve Will's latest blog posting? They are heading in that
direction.

For anybody that has used their IBMi VLP (Virtual Loaner Program) you know
that they have many of the technical hurdles already crossed to do "IBM i in
the cloud". I have used the VLP for over 5 years now and am quite impressed
with how I can configure an entirely new IBMi LPAR in about 15 minutes from
the web, and then about 2hrs later I get an email with login info for my new
IBMi LPAR. I know not everybody has had the same success as I have - as I
understand it some have issues with getting the VPN working correctly.
