Konrad,

I think you mean a 8203-E4A, not a 8204-E3A nor a 8204-E4A.

When you don't have an HMC, all firmware updates are disruptive
(meaning a full IPL is required to activate an update to an FSP.

If you are OS Managed, then you get your PTFs for the FSP via i5/OS.
You can use SNDPTFORD and load them from *SERVICE or download them from fix
central and use an image catalogue.

Yes, you just need to download and apply the MH ptfs as per the
previous email, and you will be fine.

AFTER you load and apply the HM PTF, at the NEXT IPL the FSP will be
loaded and activated.

Pete

This is a new 8204-E4A with what I thought were the latest greatest ptfs.
Evidently in ordering all the cums, db, security etc etc etc the service
code is not considered part of it. No LPARS, no HMC, just a little basic
box.

The IBM support crew directed me over to the AIX side of support went down
the service tree to find the code and naturally it has confusing
instructions on what is or is not required for an AIX vs iSeries machine.

Pete, as I understand your reply we just have to do the normal load and
apply MH01155 from the CD image I downloaded and then eventually do the same
with the MH01192 with a full IPL and perm apply of MH01155 for safety.

When we apply the MH01192 will the software CD apply also update the
hardware firmware side? Support seemed to be hinting there were two
pieces... Plus they are very fond of calling it a "disruptive" apply...

Thanks for the help!

Konrad

First, there isn't a problem.

The first set of columns is showing the level that is loaded on the FSP
(the
340 level), the 2nd set of columns shows what you have loaded onto i5/OS.
I
see this a lot when I do an OS upgrade or if they have had to replace an
FSP. Just order MH01155 for your i5/OS and perm apply this. Do a full IPL
(To be safe). Then order the correct PTF for 340_101 (MH01192) and temp
apply that. After a full IPL, both sides would then match. Where you
will
have on the temp side 340_101 (and active if you have a T on your front
bezel), and on the Perm side will be 340_061 (if you have a P on your
front
bezel, then this would be the one that would be loaded and activated).

Subject: Sorting out firmware levels for the 8204-E3A?? Software 320
hardware 340?

Had a false error this morning from the firmware according to IBM. They
recommended to download and apply the latest firmware MH01192, a
disruptive
change.

Below it shows our OS firmware level different than the hardware firmware
but the hardware level is active.
Not only that they are different versions, one 320 the other 340!
Can anyone help on what needs to be done? How do I get the software level
the same as the hardware level
and do I need to come up to the 340_101 level? Any great instructions? The

IBM website has all sorts of different info all over the place.

Note after going through the wizard it says that no change is necessary.

This is what the firmware status says:
