Just to add to this, as of 5.4 you can do subroutines too. So you could wrap
the check in a subroutine and return it to an indicator (not tested) by
returning 0 (default) or 1.

Just a thought, but I do like the idea of a NONMSGID though. There have been
times what that would save some lines of code that shouldn't be needed.

I assume you already know you can do this, but are looking for a simpler
way (since this is a common task, and involves more code than it really
should)

However, based on the other replies, it seems that everyone assumes you
don't know this (and apparently they don't either, because they're using
horrible kludges like GOTO, etc...)
