I appreciate the input from everyone. I am going to pursue SPS commerce's integration product. It sounds like an exact fit for what I was looking for. They handle all of the EDI translation and trading partner communications. They will be hosting a FTP server where I will be putting and getting the various files I need to use or send.

We had similar cost concerns regarding EDI software. We (my boss, actually) finally settled on EDI Complete from 1EDISource. My boss (the PC guy here) had to write a routine that sucks data off of the System i and formats it for the package. Although I run the process frequently (in our case it's a once-a-day thing), but I'm not familiar with what he had to do to the i data before pushing it to the package.
Anyway, the package's Help menu gives their name as 1EDISource; 145 South River Street; Kent, OH 44240; 877-EDI-1EDI.
