Thank you for the Power 6 tip. Did not know they changed that. I have
a power4 and two power5 boxes. My newest box is 5 year old now and
still ticking away. (Though with new Java applications being written, I
need more horse power to run them.

Nothing to worry about this isn't an HMC attached box.
First, the only thing that happens upon powering up a Power 6
box is
that the FSP will load, and when that is complete then the Green light
will
flash. Even if you ordered the box with Lan console and didn't have it
connected yet and hit the white button to make the Green light go solid,
you
would get an A600500x error in about 10 minutes. Once you connect your
PC
LAN Console, it will connect. No worries. The only time powering on a
box
is an issue is when it is HMC managed, then you should have your HMC
setup
with DHCP on the private network using ETH0 (Best practices) and a
connection from that HMC private network to your HMC1 port on your
Power5 or
Power6 box.
Chris, those addresses that you have below are incorrect for
Power6
boxes, the new addresses for Power 6 boxes are now 169.254.2.147 for
HMC1 &
169.254.3.147 for HMC2.
You should ALWAYS go into the FSP via the ASMI when you first
get
your machine to Set your admin password (Set it back to admin, and don't
get
fancy), which will then open up the full ASMI menus, and then set your
Time
of Day. The first time into ASMI, you only have the one option to
change
password.

Ahh! Your HMC ports will not get DHCP from the HMC, which you do not
have any way. No real biggie. The default IP address for the two FSP
HMC ports are HMC1 = 192.168.2.147 and HMC2 = 192.168.3.147 if you
decide to plug them into your network you will have to set a second IP
address on a PC in the same LAN segment or a Virtual IP on a router to
get to that IP. But you may never need to get to the FSP on your system
so it is really no biggie. Just keep the default IP address in case you
ever need them.

I wasn't expecting the boss to even attempt a power-up until I was back
from my vacation.
And I thought I'd told him that every relevant manual explicitly said
not to even plug the power in until the LAN Console was hooked-up and
waiting.
Then I saw the power cord plugged in, and my blood pressure probably hit
200/150.
What should we be prepared to find, at this point? Exactly what sort of
"bad things" can happen if you plug in the power first?
