That document is misleading. The PTF save file is not required after a LODPTF has been performed so it can be deleted at that point. Whether you do so depends on whether you need to distribute the PTF to another system, whether to may need to reload after permanently removing the PTF, and whether you want to keep the cover letter.

If you follow the link on that page to "clearing up your save files and cover letters" you'll see it also says:

"After you have permanently installed a fix, you may want to delete the fix save file and cover letter if you do not need to distribute it to another system and if you are satisfied that the fix is not defective."

which is also misleading (and from a certain viewpoint simply wrong). If a PTF is defective then you shouldn't have permanently applied it. I'd also like to see how a defective permanently applied PTF can be removed easily.
