I've installed an RSA II card into our HMC, which gives me remote
access to the screen, keyboard and mouse of the HMC. All of our HMCs
are x3550 based, so this wouldn't work if you have a desktop version.
I've never tried the putty route, and from my gut feeling i'd advise
against it. It may go well, but the chances are it won't. And in that
case, you'll have to drive there anyway.
