UIM is an acronym for User Interface Management - it is a markup language similar to HTML and such. You have tags with attributes. It is used by IBM for many of the "Work with..." screens - object is a panel group - *PNLGRP is the object type. You tell it what you want to see and UIM determines where everything goes.

The main documentation is an old manual - we discussed it recently - there is actually a V6R1 version labeled as such - probably the same as all the earlier ones. Find it at

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v6r1m0/topic/rzakc/sc415715.pdf

UIM is covered in Part 3 - Chapter 15 and on, as well as Appendices A & B. Chapter 16 shows how to create a simple menu.

If you have installed QUSRTOOL (free option of the OS), there are sample source members there for various UIM objects. There is a source file called QATTUIM - the source is for examples in an old manual (Guide to Programming Application and Help Displays SC41-0011) which is no more, probably. May have been replaced by the one I mention above - not sure. But the examples will help you - easy enough to copy and add to.

UIM menus can have only one column with multiple pages - DSPF menus can have 2 columns on one page. UIM menus don't let you directly control colors and all - DSPF menus give you all the DDS capabilites.

We use UIM menus and help text in our products - very nice and easy to distribute.

Hmm. I think I've seen the word UIM before but have no idea what it is.
This one will have to go on my todo list like so many other subjects that come up here.
One day I'll get there.

I have had the issue you describe with /36 menus. If I
compile/create it in a project/development library, simply
copying the objects to production does not work.

I have not done many "native" menus using STRSDA. I use UIM
to create menus because it actually allows me to use all 99
of the menu options (not that I've ever overloaded one that
badly!). With STRSDA you may have 99 menu options, but you
are still limited to a single panel. Anyway, I have never
had an issue creating a UIM menu in a project library and
then simply copying the *Menu object to production. The only
thing I hate about UIM, which Vern and I have discussed here
before, is that there is no graphical interface tool, such as
STRSDA or, even, STRRLU (yuk).

Subject: RE: How to compile a menu?

Hi,

Now if you'd already modified that menu with SDA in a
development library, how do you get it to compile with a
program when you install it?

It's one thing our <CMS> doesn't manage : we just send a
message reminding to execute SDA on the new menu source so
that all the objects get created properly.

I believe you should not directly edit the MSGF - you
change that in
SDA with one of the function keys - where you specify the
command to
be executed by each option.

Not that I haven't done that ;-) but you should not have to.

Current objects are a *MSGF, *MENU and *FILE. I have been
told if you compile the menu all three objects are created?
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
