We use 7-zip on Windows and it's always irked me to file transfer to the
PC to zip things. I'd love to keep it all on the i box. Never thought
about it being open source.

Would 7-zip work for you? It's open source, and provides 256-bit AES
encryption support.

I managed to get it to work under IBM i (tested on V5R4) in PASE.

I haven't used it in production, however, just in some proof-of-concept

things, and it seemed to work. I don't know if it's suitable for your

purposes, but might be worth looking at.
