To me the problem doesn't appear to be IBM i specific, notwithstanding your observations about IBM i activation groups. This is a common problem with distributed architecture, and ODBC/JDBC in particular, which is occasionally rectified by intelligent connection pool & user interface design. Will they at least take responsibility for connection-pool management?
