I'd also recommend SQL as Chuck Pence suggested.

One other tidbit....if the file you're putting the records into is
journaled, then either stop journaling first or make sure you use
commitment control when writing to it. (Unless you happen to have the
HA Performance LICPGM or journal caching PPRQ installed.) If you have
more than 100K records to insert then you'd probably be better off
reading with an SQL cursor so you can do periodic commits.

Also, consider dropping any indexes, removing LF members and/or
constarints that may be built over the destination file. It will be
faster to rebuild them after the copy is done.

Lastly, make sure the destination file is defined with a SIZE(xxxxx)
ALLOCATE(*YES) that will hold all the records.

We are using a CPYF to select a subset of our G/L detail file (that has
140,000,000 records) into an extract file.  It is taking a loooong time, as
you can imagine.  The record selection criteria will be different each
quarter, but it is basically selecting the posted G/L records for the
quarter (a range of range of period numbers) for the current fiscal year.

Anyone have some suggestions for speeding it up?  Maybe using OPNQRYF with a
CPYFRMQRYF ?
