Which, by all accounts, was really just an overlay on top of OPM to
allow languages that required static linking to be implemented in it. If
I remember right, Pascal and FORTRAN were both implemented as EPM languages.
PL/I, remarkably, is pure OPM. I wrote the MI compilation front-end we
use here (an elaboration on the one in the back of the V2R3 API book) in
PL/I, during a brief period when we had access to the compiler in a
beta-test OS installation. And I still think that offering an ILE PL/I
compiler would have been a much better idea than grafting parts of PL/I
onto RPG and calling it "/free."
