The problem isn't that I can't return the number of elements
populated. The problem is that the integrated web services wizard does
not give the opportunity to provide a field that has the array count in
it.

When defining the output in the wizard the parent data structure
is shown and the wizard gives me the chance to provide a return
parameter field name that has the element count in it. The service then
only returns that number of array elements when the service is called.

There is no corresponding field to input an element count for
the nested data structures, so the service just returns the whole array.
The wizard doesn't even show the nested data structures as return parms,
only the parent data structure is offered.
