I don't know if that's what he was thinking about or not. If so, he's
probably SOL now-a-days as we lowly developers can't display the audit
journal.

Any others out there for whom this rings a bell?

function key that would show you what had been printed.

But he couldn't remember how to do it and I never heard of such functionality.
