We are actually backing up to a hell of a lot of tapes at the moment and
can't use save files due to the space issue. Guessing DASD needs to be
at least 1tb to work with but haven't had chance to bring down this box
to test it yet. (It's busy backing up most of the time!)

Virtual tapes would work but they seem to need DASD which again has no
space.

good balance between size and performance.

Can you get virtual tape to image catalogs to work this way? I don't
think that image catalogs will work on remote devices though.
