I believe the reason why collaborative open source projects for the
System i have not received attention is because programmers do not have
a System i to work on nights and weekends. Programmers cannot use their
employers' production System i machines for this purpose, nor will
organizations allow non-employees to sign onto their machines for
collaborative open source development.
Other software runs on desktop PCs that everyone has in their home, so
programmers have a machine to write new code on.
Until someone makes a System i universally available for night and
weekend work by a crowd of programmers, these projects will not make
progress.
