I believe IBM has more of an interest in owning MySQL database rights than Java. IBM has said recently that Linux installations on Power System machines are increasing at a very rapid pace compared to installations of AIX or i.
They have also developed a MYSQL database engine that allows PHP to access DB2 database directly. What's different is it appears to the PHP script that it is accessing a MYSQL database which will allow system i people to take advantage of the millions of PHP apps available using PHP and MYSQL.
Also note that V6R1 installs now come with MYSQL preloaded and preconfigured.
Start looking at PHP is you haven't done so already.
