Hi Dave
By "maintenance of existing programs" you mean a change to an existing
program, it depends upon the type of change.
If its to rectify a drastic problem, then usually the users are quite
amenable to all getting off the system there and then.
If its a change to the program (and NOT the display file) then usually the
promotion to production is made and then we ask the users to completely
sign off then sign back on at their convenience to ensure that they are
using the latest version.
If the change requires a modification to the display file AND its used by a
large number of users at one time, (ORDER ENTRY for example).then again,
usually the promotion to production is made and then we ask the users to
completely sign off then sign back on at their convenience to ensure that
they are using the latest version. This is because we have within order
entry, a method of swapping which version of the display file is being
changed. We have a MASTER version, then we have 2 other files. One of them
being an exact copy of the master version, and the other one being the
prior copy of the master version. This whole principal works VERY WELL.
However, if it is a change to a file, then we have to arrange a time period
(usually 5:00 a.m. some particular day) when we can arrange for the users
to be off the system for the promotion to take place.

Just a curiosity question,

What is your practice for maintenance of existing programs?
Is there a set time each week that users know the system will be
down for maintenance?
Or can maintenance be done at any time?

Thanks for your response.
