I am learning, hence the question: Why the "and" condition? Would this
work too?

SELECT * FROM myalias WHERE substr(SRCDTA, 6, 2) ='I '


Both the original and the above will drop I specs with a file, DS, or field
name starting in byte 7. I think what you may want is:

SELECT * FROM myalias WHERE substr(SRCDTA, 6, 1) ='I' and substr(SRCDTA, 7,
1) <> '*'
