We have two UPSs: an APC with an auxiliary pack, and the Powerware. They
replaced two APC units that had (one after the other) become completely
unreliable.
After a lengthy power outage last summer, that had us shutting down
almost everything, and still had our Internet connection and FTP server
crash on us when the Powerware unit ran dry, we bought a simple
rack-mount transfer switch. That in itself turned out to be a source of
irritation, because what looked like standard CEE power sockets on the
back panel in the picture had turned out to be something a bit more
exotic, and the switch (being used) didn't come with cables.
I put the absolutely essential loads on the transfer switch, so they
could draw from either UPS in case one failed or ran dry. Works beautifully.
Unfortunately, it's not really big enough, and we don't really have
enough excess capacity on the larger of the two UPSs to put any of the
400s on the transfer switch.
