In the current case, I'd have a hard time trying to justify using CPYTOIMPF to get a field out of a table where the field has already had essentially everything done to it that CPYTOIMPF is expected to do. To me, that doesn't seem to be the "intended purpose".

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the current case.

I dunno.. it seems like every day I see a forum post, or e-mail message about someone having trouble with getting CPYTOIMPF to do exactly what they want. It just doesn't seem like it's that difficult to write your own that WILL do what you want, or to grab a freebie from somewhere.
