I provide the cost code numbers to the customer. They don't care what I use,
as long as they can tie it to some reference number they use. I will
frequently tie my cost code number to a "pay item" that Jerry referenced.

That ties my accounting system to their accounting system. Construction
accounting was really made simple through the use of CSI (Construction
Standards Institute) codes. Everyone knows that 31 22 13 stands for "Rough
Grading".

That's interesting. That sounds somewhat like my earlier thought about
cross referencing with Project ID and Task ID. Where each Project ID and
Task ID would be unique.

In your case, are cost codes generic - the same code you might use across
multiple projects? A code to represent traditional project phases
(analysis, design, development, documentation, etc.), for example?

Or could cost codes be something supplied by the customer?
