There are no such direct restrictions on current hardware, like it was
earlier when you had primary partitions. A POWER 550 won't run V5R3
though, so the discussion is moot anyway.

I think you might be talking 'bout a new 550. I'm talking about a 550
that's probably 3'ish years old. Definately Power 5.. (+)?
I'm not sure if there are any partitions currently running on the 550 at
V5R3, but I'm almost positive there were fairly recently.

Since this is an 'old' iSeries (or it might have been considered a i5), it
may not have an HMC.

What I'm gathering from your statement is :
If you do not have an HMC, then you have a primary partition and have the
OS version (+/-) restriction.
If you have an HMC, you don't have Version Release restriction.
