Okay, so I think and behave like an RPG programmer. But I don't have much weight with IBM and what little I may have I don't want to waste, pining for yet another GUI. I really think IBM has other priorities. Not that they're abandoning ILE, but that they have an interest in putting Java first - Dingbats ;-)

I'm actually impressed with the work that a small Danish company is doing on a native virtual terminal interface. They shared some details on the Web400 list, where the RPG UI code is divided into two parts. The first part uses a display file for I/O. The second part maps display file I/O to HTML or any other relevant format understood by the client. They provide a virtual terminal bridge between the two parts where
the screen is mapped to internal data structures, exposing I/O fields
and constants, so you can reformat them to your liking. That's about as close to a native GUI that I'd like to see. And I'd be pleased if a small Danish company developed it. They promote it as open-source.

It's okay with me if 3rd party companies fill in the gaps. My company is small. I relate to them.
