That may be a rhetorical question, but I'll respond - just in case not. Disparate systems leads to more training, more maintenance, more problems, more cost. A couple of disparate systems may double your capacity, but quadrupal your complexity.
I think it's IT's greatest challenge, and often it's biggest nightmare. But I see it more as a logistics and human relations issue than a technical one. And IBM may promote "i" as a means of consolidating disparate workloads, but that's still like sewing parts of mobile homes together from different manufacturers on a single lot. You may have a single shelter, but the roof still leaks.
