Ultimately, isn't this really a question of using IBM i as a "Business
Logic Server"? Ultimately, that plays to the strengths of the platform,
taking GUI out of the picture.... The GUI itself could be anything....

Pluta has used this term, and I think it's perfectly apt for describing
where our platform is headed. With the push toward web services, and
the new(ish) integration products from IBM (Integrated Web Services for
i), IBM makes it easier than ever to publish your business logic as web
services.

So, what if you don't like web services? No problem, define stored
procedure interfaces instead. Invoke your business logic through SQL...

The point here is adopting MVC design patterns, so your business logic
can be externalized.

Eric DeLong

Nathan,
Out of curiosity how are you writing the HTML? Are you writing RPG
programs to output HTML? JSP or JSF?

I too agree that I don't know that we need a GUI when there are so many
options already there. I assume people want some kind of thick client
instead of a green screen. I personally would not want to see IBM put
out a Windows style GUI for the i.

Yeah, I should have qualified my statement. I prefer to steer clear
of the IBM i HTTP server administrative console because the UI is so
tedious.

And to be honest, when folks call for a native GUI, most the time I
don't know what they're talking about. But I generally get the idea
that they don't want Websphere middleware. And they do want a
programming interface comparable to a display file interface. And
they don't want to learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. And the UI must
be productive and efficient. And if those conditions are met, then
they'd happily crank out new applications that would propel the
platform into the future. And I tend to believe them.
