No, you can't build an index over two tables. Query optimizer can perform
things like bitmap merge though, so you should still build indexes over
tables being joined etc.

BTW, nowadays most queries are running in SQE, so you should really start
using Visual Explain rather than debug messages. Visual Explain has an
index advisor in it as well.
