We switched to using the printer names and dns. Our network guy is an
outside consultant and has been here for years. Occasionally justifies
his existence by changing the addresses of various subnets therefore
changing the IP addresses of various printers and whatnot.
Has occasionally involved changing the IP addresses of our i's.
So, yeah, using host names or hardcoded IP addresses is pretty taboo here.

Clarify what you mean by "but not the iSeries DNS".
If you do
CFGTCP
12. Change TCP/IP domain information
Domain name server:
Internet address . . . . . . . '10.10.4.250'
'10.10.4.252'
'10.17.4.180'
Aren't there three addresses in there also?
Aren't they all currently serving DNS?
You have a large network, you most likely have more than one.
I suggest recording more than one here. I'd use all three. And, I'd make
it a quarterly or annual thing to review the list. Why? Well, changing
the IP addresses of our DNS' have also been done. He always phases that
in and doesn't do them all at once. Having more than one allows the phase
in. However, if you don't review them periodically, and he's changed all
three over a period of time, the experience won't put you in your happy
place.
You can often compare option 12 with Windows, Start, Settings, Network
Connections, Local Area Network, General, Properties, Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), Properties, Use the following DNS server addresses. Although I
just noticed that we now use "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" in
Windows. Does i have this capability?
