Don't ignore the possibility that the mainframe shut down the
connection. This may just be the first time the mainframe shut down
during your backups.

Subject: RE: Weird Message During System Save

FYI....We resolved this by just varying off that controller prior to
starting the system save on Saturday night, but it was annoying to have
to do this in the first place when I've never had to before on this
system (and this is years of doing backups on this system with that same
controller out there the whole time).

My guess is that something in V5R4 and/or a PTF caused it to happen now
where it never has on previous releases, but in any event...it was an
unexpected surprise.

Going tangential on this.
If you're running a 14 hour dedicated process, from the system console,
with the system in a restricted state, and your system console is the
HMC, what recommendation is there to have it send out a page when bad
things happen? We're looking at offsiting this. (It is nice to be able
to do this from your home while in your PJ's.) However, even if you're
on site the temptation to go clean your desk, watch a DVD, read a book
on SQL while in the "library", or write a funky program that you
normally don't have time for during regular hours, is strong. Getting
something on the squawk would help ensure timely handling. I get
CPF3763 several times a week holding up a save.
