I tend to agree with you. Learning DDL didn't take too much. And you're
right about DDS being so limited.
Really learn DDL. It will help you:
1 - Better define data.
2 - Use more features like constraints and stuff that can't be done in DDS
but only can be bolted on.
3 - Become more marketable.
4 - Understand other platforms better.

Don't be like the people who limit their SQL learning to only that which
can be easily prompted within STRSQL or from RTVQMQRY ALWQRYDFN(*YES).
Really learn the tool. Doing the simple way is like saying you know RPG
because you generated an inquiry screen from within a CASE tool like
AS/SET once.
